The excitement of the next Olympics Games begin even before the previous one is over. So, even as Beijing Olympics 2008 came to a flourishing finish, there was speculation about who would host the next Olympics in four years time. After London was chosen as the city of choice, the excitement is palpable as London readies itself for one of the biggest sporting events in the world to be held in 2012.

The 2012 Olympic Games is an event that people from around the world are anxiously awaiting. This yearís Olympic Games are going to be held in the city of London, United Kingdom. The Olympics is scheduled to begin on 27 July 2010 and will conduct various sporting events until the 12 August 2010. London has played host to the Olympic Games twice before in 1908 and 1948. The Olympics will be hosted in the London for the third time which is most number of times any city has ever been given this opportunity. An estimated 15,000 athletes are said to be coming together from different continents to take part in the 2012 Olympic Games. 205 nations are taking part in the event. The modern Olympics have become more than just a sporting event since its in inception in 1896. Now the event plays a key role in bringing together various cultures around the world. When it was first initialized, the founder Baron Pierre de Coubertin wanted it to be an event that would bring together sports, culture and education. His goal has long been achieved and this is reflected in the way the Olympic Games are conducted nowadays.

Volleyball was first included in the Olympics in 1964. Over the years, the key contenders for the volleyball title have been the Brazil, Russian and Italian teams. Beach volleyball was introduced later as a sister sport of volleyball. Beach volleyball debuted in the Olympics in 1996 and is played on beach sand.



Indoor Sports

Wrestling had been included in the modern Olympics since its inception in 1896. Womenís wrestling was included only in 2004. Other indoor events include gymnastics. Artistic gymnastics was part of the first modern Olympics and continues to be a popular event among the masses. Floor, pommel horse, vault, rings and parallel bars and high bars were the menís events. Uneven bars, vault, balance beam and floor are the womenís gymnastics events. Rhythmic gymnastics is only for women and was incepted in 1984. Rhythmic gymnastics is a mix of dance and gymnastics and various props like ropes, balls, clubs and ribbons are used along with music.
